The downstream connection has a job of its own

When attached to a Thunderbolt host, the rear Thunderbolt 3 socket supports uses that should not be assigned to an ordinary USB-C data socket. This matters when a desk includes a Thunderbolt peripheral or a display arrangement that uses that output. Start by identifying the host port; a matching USB-C shape alone does not establish the full Thunderbolt connection.

Dell provides a separate WD19TBS resolution table because monitor capability changes with host bandwidth and wiring. Treat it as a setup document rather than assuming the WD19 or WD19S table applies unchanged. The physical layout looks familiar enough that this is an easy purchase mistake.

Check power and missing audio before swapping docks

The 180W supply supports up to 130W charging on compatible Dell systems and a maximum of 90W on non-Dell systems. A high-demand non-Dell notebook therefore may still need its normal charger. The larger adapter does not remove that cross-brand limit.

This S variant omits 3.5mm audio ports, as the selected listing makes clear. USB audio can be an alternative if that fits the equipment you already own. With Gigabit Ethernet and several USB accessory connections, the dock remains oriented toward a fixed desk. Compare the exact model and included adapter first, then investigate firmware and laptop support before replacing a working installation merely to obtain a newer-sounding name.
