Plugable TBT4-UDZ

The TBT4-UDZ needs a more careful compatibility check than its four video sockets suggest. Windows and Mac computers use its display arrangement differently, and a USB-C-shaped connection alone does not establish the result.

Consider it for

  • A documented Windows multi-monitor workstation
  • Dual native-display Macs within the manufacturer support matrix

Check before buying

  • No downstream Thunderbolt accessory port
  • Mac and Windows monitor counts differ; no universal four-screen promise

Read the display groups before buying adapters

On supported Windows Thunderbolt 4 or USB4 systems with the required DP 1.4 HBR3 and DSC capabilities, Plugable documents up to four 4K60 screens. Some hosts must disable the built-in display. Mac use is limited to the host’s native display support and the dock’s two display groups; base M1/M2 systems do not become dual-display computers through this dock.

Check the exact configuration and included power supply.

The downstream USB-C socket is not another Thunderbolt port

The rear USB-C accessory connection is for USB data and charging, not a Thunderbolt peripheral or USB-C display. That matters if an expensive monitor or storage device expects Thunderbolt downstream. The useful extras instead include 2.5Gbps Ethernet, card readers, and multiple USB connections.

Use the dock’s detailed matrix as the purchase checklist

Host charging is listed at up to 100W. For displays, start with the exact laptop and monitor resolution, then select a supported connection arrangement. Do not assume an active four-screen Windows example also applies to a Mac. If you need to convert a DisplayPort output, the manufacturer requires an active adapter rather than a passive DP++ adapter.

Plugable UD-3900

The UD-3900 makes most sense when replacing the laptop is unnecessary but its connections are inconvenient. It can attach through USB-A or USB-C, so an older machine can keep its keyboard, network cable, and two office monitors together.

Plugable UD-3900PDZ

A desk with one main screen and two smaller reference monitors is the useful starting point for the UD-3900PDZ. Its three HDMI sockets are not equivalent: one carries native USB-C video, while the other two rely on DisplayLink software.
