The laptop must accept the higher power level

HP specifies up to 180W over the host connection for compatible HP and non-HP devices supporting Power Delivery 3.1. A 230W external adapter feeds the complete dock. These are different roles: the larger brick does not mean a laptop receives 230W, and a notebook limited to an older power profile cannot be assumed to accept 180W.

Before paying for this model, read the laptop’s supported USB-C charging profile. A mobile workstation that relies on a proprietary power connector may still need its original supply. The potential benefit is reducing desk wiring for a machine that genuinely supports this higher-power path, not simply buying the largest number.

Plan the whole workstation, including the network

The port selection includes HDMI, two full-size DisplayPort connections, downstream Thunderbolt 4 and multifunction USB-C. HP describes a maximum of four external displays, or three alongside the computer’s own display, under supported conditions. That maximum is not a four-screen promise for every Mac or Windows laptop.

Five USB-A connections and multiple USB-C connections make room for more peripherals than a small travel hub, while 2.5GbE may help on a suitably equipped office network. Managed deployment features are part of the product’s business focus. A home user with a 65W laptop and one monitor should compare simpler options first; much of the Ultra’s extra hardware would otherwise have no job to do.
