HP Docking Stations: USB-C G6 and Thunderbolt Options

HP’s G6 names describe substantially different power and connection choices. The USB-C 100W G6 covers a conventional powered desk. The Thunderbolt 4 Ultra 180W G6 targets hosts that can actually use higher Power Delivery 3.1 output. Buying the larger dock is useful only when the laptop and workload justify it.

A familiar HP laptop family name is not enough to settle monitor compatibility. Check the full computer model and its USB-C or Thunderbolt specification. Then decide which accessories stay connected, whether the office network benefits from 2.5GbE, and which management features are supported on that host.

Choosing within HP

  • The dock’s external adapter rating and the power delivered to the laptop are separate values.
  • Verify PD 3.1 support before expecting 180W through USB-C.
  • An OS listed as compatible does not guarantee every maximum display arrangement.
  • Cable bundles and renewed listings should be compared as purchasing options for the same hardware.
