Consider it for
- Windows dual-4K workstations with verified DSC
- Separating slow input devices from faster storage
Check before buying
- Dual 4K60 or triple 4K30 requires DP 1.4 HBR3 with DSC.
- Independent MST multi-monitor operation is not supported on macOS.
- Laptop GPU display-count limits still apply.
DSC is the dividing line
The DK31C2DHSPD makes a particularly clear case for checking the laptop before the dock. Its official table gives dual 4K60 or triple 4K30 with DisplayPort 1.4 HBR3 and Display Stream Compression. Remove DSC and the dual-screen ceiling becomes 1440p60; a DisplayPort 1.2 host is listed for dual 1080p60. Those are materially different desks built around the same enclosure.
If you own three 4K monitors, decide whether 30Hz is acceptable before treating the three video sockets as a match. For ordinary reference documents that may be a reasonable compromise. For an all-day primary display where smooth scrolling matters, two screens at 60Hz may be the more sensible arrangement.
Check the exact configuration and included power supply.
Check on AmazonReserve the faster USB ports for storage
The six-port USB hub includes two USB-C connections at 10Gbps, two USB-A connections at 5Gbps and two USB 2.0 connections. A keyboard and mouse can occupy the slower pair while leaving higher-bandwidth sockets accessible. That allocation is more informative than the headline port count.
An included power supply enables up to 100W laptop charging. The dock uses native DisplayPort MST, without a DisplayLink installation, and targets Windows and ChromeOS. It should not be selected for independent triple-screen macOS operation. Check the graphics processor’s total display limit too: keeping the laptop panel active can change how many external screens remain available.
