A faster socket cannot upgrade the whole route
Imagine a dock advertised with 2.5Gb Ethernet connected to a gigabit router port. The advertised dock specification does not turn the router port into a faster one. The supported link between those two devices, the rest of the network and the task being performed all matter. Start by identifying what you want to improve: internet downloads, access to a local server or simply having a wired connection.

Trace the path on paper
Write down the computer-to-dock connection, the dock's Ethernet specification, the cable route and the exact switch or router port it reaches. Then identify the destination. A local storage server follows a different path from a website across your internet connection. Record the known specifications and leave unknown ones blank until you check them.
For a local transfer, include the storage at both ends in your notes. A file-copy result reflects more than networking. For internet use, include the service plan and any business VPN you normally use. This prevents an upgrade decision based on the assumption that one low result identifies the dock as the cause.
If you only need to add wired access, compare a separate network adapter with replacing the entire dock. The smaller purchase may be sufficient, provided there is an appropriate spare host connection and operating-system support.

Read the operating-system and driver notes for the exact model. Avoid assuming that the display working means Ethernet must work, or that a driver for a similar-looking product is suitable. Keep the manufacturer's download page available before changing the setup, particularly when the computer will otherwise have no network access.
Host connection can also determine whether the Ethernet hardware is available. CalDigit documents a Thunderbolt or suitable USB4 PCIe requirement for the TS4's built-in network connection. Test one question at a time
First confirm that the operating system recognizes the intended Ethernet interface and that it establishes a link. Note the reported link speed. Then test the activity you actually care about, with other downloads and transfers paused where practical. Record the conditions so a later comparison uses the same route and task.
An internet speed test is useful for assessing that internet session; it does not isolate the dock's local network performance. If diagnosis remains unclear, provide the connection map and results to support rather than treating repeated speed tests as evidence that the hardware is defective.
Also check reconnecting the laptop and returning from sleep. If the issue is intermittent, note whether only networking disappears or the whole dock disconnects. Those observations distinguish a network-specific question from a problem earlier in the connection path. Buy replacement hardware after identifying the missing capability or confirmed fault, not simply after seeing a larger Ethernet number on another model.
