CalDigit TS4

The TS4 is worth examining when the desk contains more than monitors: fast USB drives, audio, cards, and a network cable all compete for ports. Its eight USB accessory ports are rated at 10Gbps, so choosing between USB-A and USB-C need not mean choosing a slower port.

Consider it for

  • A Thunderbolt workstation with several fast USB accessories
  • DisplayPort or Thunderbolt monitors and UHS-II cards

Check before buying

  • HDMI needs an adapter
  • Ethernet requires PCIe-capable USB4 or Thunderbolt; native Mac display limits remain

Start with your screen cables

There is a full-size DisplayPort connection and two downstream Thunderbolt 4 ports. HDMI monitors require an appropriate adapter; there is no native HDMI socket. The documented dual-display configurations depend on the host, with additional DSC and DisplayPort requirements above 4K60.

Check the exact configuration and included power supply.

One feature has a less obvious host requirement

The 2.5Gbps Ethernet connection requires a Thunderbolt host or a USB4 host supporting PCIe. A basic USB-C computer does not gain every feature just because it connects. Check this before choosing the TS4 primarily to replace a network adapter.

Consider the whole desk instead of the port total

The 98W charging specification, SD and microSD UHS-II readers, and front/rear audio options make this a candidate for a permanent workstation. A person using only a keyboard and one HDMI screen may get little value from the extra infrastructure. Conversely, someone frequently swapping drives and cards should map where those devices will connect and reserve the downstream Thunderbolt ports for peripherals that need them.

CalDigit TS5

The TS5 favors a desk built around Thunderbolt connections. Four Thunderbolt 5 sockets include the upstream laptop connection, leaving three downstream for monitors and other devices. It is a different layout from a dock that dedicates most of its rear panel to HDMI.
