CalDigit Docking Stations: TS4, TS5, TS5 Plus and Element 5

CalDigit’s choice is not simply which dock has the newest Thunderbolt number. The Element 5 emphasizes downstream Thunderbolt expansion, the TS4 supplies a broad established workstation port mix, and the TS5 family changes power, bandwidth, networking, and the balance of ordinary USB versus Thunderbolt connections.

Consider the equipment beyond your laptop. A TS5 Plus 10Gb Ethernet port becomes more useful when the switch and network storage can support it. A hub with several Thunderbolt outputs becomes more useful when your displays and drives can connect directly, rather than requiring a collection of separate adapters. The right purchase depends on the completed desk.

Host exceptions are significant across this range. Basic USB-C computers do not receive the same functions as Thunderbolt systems, some models exclude Windows Thunderbolt 3 hosts, and high-resolution or high-count screen layouts require specific hardware. The individual pages explain these boundaries so that a large maximum specification does not become an assumed guarantee.

Choosing within CalDigit

  • Count downstream Thunderbolt ports after subtracting the laptop connection.
  • Add necessary HDMI adapters to the cost and cable plan.
  • Check PCIe host support where the Ethernet implementation requires it.

CalDigit TS4

The TS4 is worth examining when the desk contains more than monitors: fast USB drives, audio, cards, and a network cable all compete for ports. Its eight USB accessory ports are rated at 10Gbps, so choosing between USB-A and USB-C need not mean choosing a slower port.

CalDigit TS5

The TS5 favors a desk built around Thunderbolt connections. Four Thunderbolt 5 sockets include the upstream laptop connection, leaving three downstream for monitors and other devices. It is a different layout from a dock that dedicates most of its rear panel to HDMI.
