Consider it for
- Mixed-resolution HDMI office setups
- A desk needing card slots and an audio jack
Check before buying
- One HDMI output is limited to 2K/1080p.
- j5create drivers are required; do not substitute a generic DisplayLink installer.
- USB-C video capability is required; charger is separate.
Assign the sharper screen to the right socket
Buying two matching 4K monitors does not make this a dual-4K dock. The JCD542 supports one HDMI display up to 4K at 30Hz and another up to 2048 × 1152 or 1080p at 60Hz. A sensible arrangement is to keep the detailed document on the higher-resolution screen and email or reference material on the second. If equal-resolution screens are essential, eliminate it from the shortlist before comparing the smaller ports.
j5create requires display-driver installation on Windows and macOS. Its host requirements also call for USB-C DisplayPort Alt Mode. This combination deserves attention on a managed work computer: ask whether the approved driver can be installed before expecting both monitors to work. We do not identify that software as DisplayLink without chipset evidence.
Check the exact configuration and included power supply.
Check on AmazonAccount for the power supply and desk wiring
The dock accepts USB-C charging pass-through, but the standard package does not include a charger. The advertised 100W figure should therefore not be read as a bundled 100W supply. Its three USB-A ports, Ethernet, memory-card slots and audio jack cover a fairly conventional workstation. The long, flat enclosure and cable-routing compartment make more sense under or beside a laptop than in a pocket. For a purchase comparison, include the charger and monitor cables in your total setup cost.
